Maryam Mirzakhani is the first woman (and the only one until 2022) to be awarded the Fields Medal, the highest honor in mathematics. Her journey is extraordinary, and she tragically passed away at the young age of 40 in 2017
It was as a former math teacher that I became interested in her. A teacher for whom the complex world of mathematics is still familiar. The pure beauty of theoretical abstractions, their miraculous entanglement with reality, but more prosaically, the university benches, the social segregation of prestigious schools, the brilliant researchers and the teachers in disadvantaged areas... Maryam Mirzakhani embodies for me those scientists with a human face, whose great ambition is inseparable from an inspiring humility.
